Classically trained opera singer and devoted jazz flirt Alexandra Day has combed out her acoustic sound from surprising inspirations. Moodiness to rival the best in the business, combined with spunky genre-bending and throwback images of the bygone characterize her songwriting, realized by sultry, versatile vocal stylings and technically motivated piano accompaniment.
Her live shows are full of humor, and her best joke is to just tell the truth. Supporting her debut release “No Castles No Moats” has taken her all over the East coast, and to the Caribbean and Central America. Her new CD “Untangle” came out in March of 2011, and is experienced brisk sales during Alexandra’s self-booked solo Boston-to-New-Orleans tour.
As a jazz singer, she has performed at bustling local joints such as Chris’ Jazz Cafe, Warmdaddy’s, the Tritone, Time, Triumph Brewery, as well as fondly remembered venues such as Orblieb’s Jazzhaus and Zanzibar Blue. She was selected as a soloist for the Best of Duke Ellington Sacred Concerts, the Clifford Brown Jazz Fest’s capstone event. She has collaborated with highly-reputed jazz composer and guitarist Matt Davis, and sings regularly with a rotating cast of diverse and talented Philadelphia-based musicians including Korey Riker, Victor North, Luke O’Reilly, Frank Strauss, Leon Jordan Jr., Leon Jordan Sr., and Ken Pendergast.
