Education

Our Music Education Goal:

Developing musical talent and technical skill, encouraging and specializing the playing of jazz, the sharing of and the enjoyment of
the musical art form.

Talent, potential and abilities deserve to be raised to the highest level possible. I don’t think anyone can argue with that statement. How those traits are brought to bear is quite another question. Many children and young adults cannot afford to take advantage of the multitude of talent that exists to teach and nurture their latent aspirations.

Our schools, suffering under a constant pressure to reduce costs have deemed it necessary to remove many of the arts programs, including music programs.

I am not sure that we, as a society, are gaining anything by tearing at the fabric of the arts, which most certainly helps to bind us as a country. In order to alleviate this problem and to offer music lessons to those who wish we state the following paradigm.

The Jazz Sanctuary, Inc. is poised to accomplish the task of a music education to those who cannot afford it and whose school is not offering it.

The Jazz Sanctuary will offer the program by musicians who play on a daily basis, both those retired educators and those who are professional career musicians. They are, to put it simply, the best in their field.

The program takes into account that many of our neediest cannot travel to take advantage of the lessons, even if they were available, which they are not.

And so, associates of The Jazz Sanctuary will travel to the student. By utilizing space in houses of worship, and secular community houses we will gain the space to give instruction, close by to the student.

ADDING TO THIS PROGRAM: The SANCTUARY JAM program giving students of jazz at University of Pennsylvania and Drexel the opportunity to play with and learn from instructors from the U of P and Drexel.  Please click here for a full description: SANCTUARY JAM

Through solicitation we will raise the funds to pay the musician/teacher and to either buy or have donated the necessary instruments if the student does not have their own.

A course of study for each instrument will be written and the student encouraged to not only practice but to play in an ensemble setting, which will be arranged by the various teachers, co-ordinated by The Jazz Sanctuary, Inc.

By developing musical talent, potential, ability and technical skill, encouraging and specializing the playing of jazz, the sharing of and the enjoyment of the musical art form, we will meet our goals in this portion of the Jazz Sanctuary, Inc. programs.
