Dear Friends,
On January 13, 2019 at the Bethlehem Baptist Church service honoring The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I was given the award pictured below which named the Alan Segal Quintet with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Award, given for community service.
The award belongs to our audience members many of whom have become our friends and many of whom write me to tell what has happened in their lives over the past year when they make their annual donation.
That award belongs to each you, our very kind and generous sponsors who have given so graciously over the years to The Jazz Sanctuary.
It belongs also to the donors, all of whom are members of our audience at one time or another. It belongs to the Priests, Ministers of Music and the persons responsible for the many charitable organizations who have asked us to provide music at Jazz & Joe events and other charitable functions who have given their support to the Jazz Sanctuary.
My thanks to the members of the “original” Alan Segal Quintet – Eddie Etkins, Leon Jordan Sr., Randy Sutin and George Sinkler who suffered through those initial years of teaching me how to play jazz in all its glory and of course my thanks to the many, many musicians who have played with and will continue to play under the banner of The Jazz Sanctuary.
No one, not one of us goes through life alone, without friends and without the support that we give each other on a daily basis. It’s easy to see why this award does not belong to just me, but to all the wonderful people and organizations that support us – The Jazz Sanctuary – in our mission.
Trust that I will do my best to continue what work is needed to make The Jazz Sanctuary as relevant as it is today for as many tomorrows as I am able.
