Randy Sutin

Randy_Sutton_vibesRandy Sutin was born in Great Falls, Montana. He studied piano starting at age 4 and guitar starting at age 8. At age 10 Randy began his study of the drums. By that time, Randy and his family had moved to Rouses Point, New York a small border town on Lake Champlain about 40 miles from Montreal, Quebec.

Randy began playing music professionally (mostly rock and some country) with local groups at age 13. At age 20, he began his study of mallet percussion, in particular the vibraphone, which has now become the main staple of his professional life as a musician. After graduating from the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, New York, Randy worked for several years in Lake Placid at the Lake Placid Club Resort as one of the staff musicians.

In 1985, Randy relocated with Marianne, his wife, to Trenton NJ. Randy played in the house rhythm section at IshKabibble’s night club in Long Branch, NJ where he accompanied soloists who would be occasionally hired to play there including Cecil Payne, Big Nick Nicholas, Charles Davis, Benny Powell, Tom Harrel, Bill Hardman and Junior Cook.

He moved to the Philadelphia area in 1989. There, Randy was a member of The Bill Hollis Quartet, the Barry Sames Jazz Ensemble, and the late pianist Eddie Green’s group. He was featured on Eddie’s last CD, “Shades of Green”. Randy also performs with Tyrone Brown’s Sting Ensemble and has been featured on two of their CDs “The Magic Within” and “Moon of the Falling Leaves”

Randy’s current musical project with his wife, Marianne, involves playing music for the community of yoga practitioners. They perform in yoga studios throughout the region and have released a CD “Meditations for Flute and Percussion”
