Rubin’s skills as a composer, arranger and producer have culminated in many recordings including the Grammy nominated CD Mess of Things (Carla Bean, 2012). He produced Lynn Riley and The World-Mix Say What (2014) as well as Lynn Riley’s first CD Too Cool (2009).
He has performed at festivals and colleges throughout the U. S. and abroad, including the Musicfest, Berks Jazz Festival, Cape May Jazz Festival, Mellon Jazz Festival, Cifford Brown Jazz Festival, Wiggins Waterfront Park Jazz Series, Presidential Jazz Festival, Festijazz La Paz, Bolivia, Hartford Jazz Festival, University of the Arts, Temple University, Drexel University, and the University of Hawaii. He is featured in a Scribe Video documentary directed by Todd Lear, which was shown at the Philadelphia Film Festival, as well as on Public Television. He has performed in shows as well, including Black Nativity and A Jew grows in Brooklyn.
He has played with Gene Carne, Phil Woods, Peter Nero, Rachelle Farrell, Elio Villafranca, Doc Gibbs, Sid Simmons, Eddie Green, Mickey Roker and Sam Reed. In addition, he frequently plays with the Chester Children’s Choir, under the direction of Dr. John Alston, at Swarthmore College.
Rubin has taught at AMLA and Drexel University.
Rubin began teaching himself electric bass at a very young age. In his early teens, he began playing the acoustic bass. In preparation for college, he studied classical technique with Carl Rossi at Settlement Music School, and continued at the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts (now University of the Arts) with Neil Cortney. While there he shifted his emphasis from classical to jazz and played in the various jazz bands under the direction of Bill Zachagni and Evan Solot.
