Our Ministries: What We Do
By serving merchant seamen of all ethnic and religious backgrounds, Seamen’s Church Institute also serves the entire port community – as a troubleshooting “advance team” and as an ambassador of goodwill for the Delaware Valley.
For every cargo ship that arrives here, SCI is there at the terminal, waiting to greet visitors to our Delaware Valley home. We strive to treat them as all guests should be treated, with kindness and in the spirit of God’s grace.
Click the links below to learn how Seamen’s Church Institute makes a real difference – in individuals’ lives, and in the local economy.
- Social Services: Providing for the human needs of seafarers.
- Workers’ Rights: Promoting social justice & fair labor practices.
- Local Community and Economy: Providing for Delaware River port communities.
- Chapel: A place to be with others praising God.
- Seminary Students and Maritime Ministry: We work to introduce students to a rewarding ministry.
“Samaritans of the Sea”
From far-away lands, ship workers arrive in our Delaware River ports without basic provisions and without the means to advocate for themselves. Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) is an ecumenical ministry called to welcome and befriend these mariners.
As one of the largest, busiest ports in the United States, our service area covers 125 miles of Delaware Riverway in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and accounts for $17 billion in regional commerce. We invite you to explore the links at the left to learn more about what SCI provides for these migrant workers of the sea, for our port community, and the local economy.
